Job Summary:

The Operations Director is a hands-on leader who is present on the production floor, deeply engaged in understanding operations, identifying roadblocks, and implementing practical solutions. This individual drives continuous improvement by fostering a culture of curiosity, collaboration, and efficiency across all production areas. Strong communication and the ability to gain buy-in at all organizational levels are essential to success in this role.

The Operations Director oversees and directs the operations of all production areas to ensure that volume, cost, waste, and quality standards are achieved. Collaborates with cross-functional teams to develop and execute production schedules, materials, and resource requirements to meet short and long-term production goals. Develops and monitors production metrics to identify and resolve issues and develop process improvements and best practices.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Primary duties:

  • Be actively present on the production floor to understand operations, identify inefficiencies, and support teams in real time.
  • Act as a mentor and educator to staff by promoting Lean principles and Six Sigma tools; lead Kaizen or continuous improvement events.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to eliminate roadblocks in production, from material shortages to process bottlenecks to attain established production goals.
  • Implement practical tooling or process solutions that drive efficiency, reduce waste, and improve throughput.
  • Build trust and collaboration across teams and departments, ensuring open communication from front-line to leadership.
  • Seek and implement feedback from production employees to enhance safety, quality, and efficiency.
  • Oversee end-to-end production operations to ensure on-time delivery, cost efficiency, and high-quality standards, while driving continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Experience with various types of production ranging from a low mix of parts with a high-volume automated assembly line to a high mix of parts with low volume individual piece part assembly.
  • Experience working with military and government contracting and prime defense contractors.
  • Works with engineers regarding automation and line improvements for STFS.
  • Works with engineers to provide quality and production improvements through the use and design of tooling, jigs, fixtures and documentation improvements.
  • Remove waste and constraints from the production process to improve efficiency and enhance productivity.
  • Works with the Maintenance Manager to facilitate a teamwork approach, combining the expertise and manpower of both departments for the completion of a project or projects
  • Must follow Quality Policy and Procedures, OSHA guidelines and regulations governing workplace safety
  • Provide leadership for the successful day-to-day operation of the facility.
  • Work closely with quality personnel to review product consistency while monitoring scrap rates to determine trends and areas of improvement.
  • Review established production schedules for all manufacturing departments to ensure established inventory levels are met while operating at the highest efficiency possible.
  • Identify resource needs and work with human resources and department managers on the recruitment, interviewing, hiring and terminating of manufacturing personnel.
  • Provides training to new and existing employees.
  • Monitor operation expenses and research ways to reduce costs while maintaining product quality.
  • Assist with STFS Inventory levels and control flow of product.
  • Develop and execute the plant manufacturing budgets.
  • Analyze workforce requirements and look for ways to create employee growth paths in a small business.
  • Conduct performance appraisals and provide coaching and guidance to all operations personnel as needed.
  • Work with purchasing to develop and improve supplier relationships.
  • Create purchase requisitions for Purchasing Manager to place orders as needed
  • Encourage and promote operating in a continuous improvement environment.
  • Participate in weekly production meetings to track the status of Sales Orders and follow up on actions necessary to ensure quality and on-time delivery.
  • Use the ERP system to monitor kitting status and resolve production issues related to shortages and late parts.
  • Work with STFS Account Manager to prioritize jobs to become more efficient or ship products early when possible.
  • Utilize the ERP system to analyze current and future workload and capacity, identifying needs for additional personnel and equipment resources.

 

Education & Training:

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in a production role
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in management role
  • Bachelor’s degree in business/finance/management/Operations or other related field experience.

 

Skills & Experience:

  • Display a proactive curiosity and initiative in understanding and improving production processes.
  • Knowledge of policies, methods and procedures of building maintenance
  • Knowledge of local vendors and sources of supply
  • Previous experience working in an ISO/AS9100 Quality system
  • Proficiency in using ERP systems and implementing technology for managing production.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy
  • Friendly and professional demeanor
  • 7+ years progressive experience in a key leadership/management role at a manufacturing facility.
  • Previous experience/strong understanding of budgeting/expense management with a basic understanding of financial and accounting practices.
  • Strong computer skills including the ability to prepare spreadsheets and use Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, Power Point and/or Access) to analyze data and trends.
  • Previous experience/best practices implementing and using continuous improvement/lean tools such as; Six Sigma, 5-S, Lean Manufacturing, Transactional Lean, etc. to drive improvement.
  • Previous experience/broad understanding of safety systems and enforcement of safety rules and policies.
  • Demonstrated strong leadership, team building and advanced coaching skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate people, assess and develop employee skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the principles and applications associated with manufacturing operations, maintenance and engineering.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills, with the ability to balance production and maintenance needs.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and listening ability.
  • A strong ability to be adaptable and flexible.
  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills.
